Before WoW Forever opens
World of Warcraft: Forever opens on 4 November 2026 at 3 p.m. Pacific time. A few things are worth doing before then, and one of them can only be done before.
- Check that your World of Warcraft subscription or Game Time runs past 4 November. Forever is included with it, and there is nothing else to buy.
- Expect nothing from the beta to come with you. Blizzard has never carried beta characters into a launch, and it has not said this one is different.
- Settle your faction and your rules with the people you will play with before anyone makes a character. Horde and Alliance can’t group, and hardcore and self-found characters play by their own rules.
- Think of a first name and a surname. On Forever every character has both, and only the two together have to be unique, so a name that was taken in 2004 isn’t taken now. Early Name Reservation comes with the paid Skyborne packs on Blizzard’s shop.
- Install your addons before the first evening, and check that each one says it works on Forever. Forever uses the modern addon system, so an addon written for Classic Era doesn’t load, and the ones you know need a build made for Forever.
- If you would like a record of the character’s whole journey, install Widsith before you make it. This is our own addon and entirely optional; nothing in the game needs it. The one reason to decide now is that a journey can only be recorded from its first minute, and nothing can go back and write down the levels you played without it. Get the addon if you are interested, and it asks nothing more of you after that.
If you do, and would rather not think about the recording again, the Widsith Uploader sends new play to the site by itself on Windows. It is on the same page as the addon, and just as optional.
What the game keeps about your character, and what it doesn’t, if you are wondering why any of this needs recording.
